FrenchFilmFest Portrait Of A Lady On Fire

A vivid portrait of the stolen romantic relationship between two young women played by Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel, who have a persuasive on-screen connection which gives this affair a life of its own… Set in Brittany in 1760, Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. But Héloïse is a reluctant bride-to-be and Marianne must paint her without her knowledge – she observes by day and paints her by night. As an intimate attraction grows between the two women, they share Héloïse’s first and last moments of freedom, all whilst Marianne secretly paints the portrait that will end it all. One of the hits at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Portrait of a Lady on Fire received a Queer Palm, as well as the award for best screenplay.

    Conviction
Part of the French Film Festival Season
    Body
Writer-director Antoine Raimbault has crafted a nail-biter of a courthouse thriller based on the murder trial of Jacques Viguier. Viguier— a father of three and distinguished law professor in Toulouse — was arrested in 2000 for killing his wife, Suzanne, after she disappeared from their house, although there was no tangible evidence to ever convict him. Acquitted at his first trial nearly ten years after the fact, Viguier was retried a year later in the Cour d’assises. Famous trial lawyer, Dupond-Moretti (Olivier Gourmet), agrees to take on the case.
