Fest-noz: Ceilidh from Brittany

20-09-2019 20:00 - 20-09-2019 23:00
French Institute
West Parliament Square Edinburgh EH1 1RF

The Robert Fish Band is inviting Breton artists Poho and Legoffic to put on a Fest-noz, the traditional form of ceilidh in Brittany.

Fest-noz, which literally translates to party night, was created in the 1950s to revive the balls that gathered farmers after toiling in the fields. The night will be a mix of Breton and Scottish influences, with traditional instruments (biniou, bombarde) and dances from both regions.

About Poho + LeGoffic (Bombarde and Biniou)
Iffic and Michael have been playing for Fest Noz for many years from Finisterre in Brittany. With a huge repertoire of dances played in the traditional duo of Bombarde and Biniou, these consummate musicians will inspire the dancers to enjoy the dynamic circles so popular in Brittany. Dances will be called.

About the Robert Fish Band
The Robert Fish Band have been getting folk on their feet in Edinburgh and beyond since the great ceilidh revival of the 1990s. We spend many an evening “walking the line between tradition and innovation with sparkling flair – and a highly contagious sense of fun” (Sue Wilson) and have played venues from Blackpool to Brittany, from Leipzig to Lochaber, from Glasgow Green to Gilmerton Miners’ Welfare Club. We play and call the steps for all the well-known Scottish ceilidh dances and a few of the more unusual ones besides, with a line-up of fiddle, accordion/whistle, guitar, bass and percussion.

A word from the bands
Welcome to the Fest noz which is a night festival of dancing to traditional music very popular in Brittany, France. Dances are held in every village and town, and thousand of folk young and old flock to them. Tonight we recreate the atmosphere in Institut Francais. The bands are friends over many years having collaborated in Cultural exchanges organised by Edinburgh’s Adult Learning Project. The bands will feature some dancing and singing in the Kan Ha Diskan style peculiar to the Breton tradition!
