In present-day Montreal, hip and handsome DJ/dad Antoine (Kevin Parent) seems to have it all – a gorgeous new wife, Rose, two darling daughters, and a globe-trotting lifestyle. The only minor fly in the ointment seems to be his ex-wife, Carole, who isn’t handling their recent split as well, and is tortured by strange dreams she doesn’t understand.
In 1969 Paris, a young mother, Jacqueline (Vanessa Paradis), is abandoned by the father of her young son, Laurent, when it is discovered the boy has Down’s syndrome. She fights for Laurent to be treated like other children.
Québécois director Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y., The Young Victoria) weaves these two seemingly unrelated stories into a vibrant, riveting drama with a superb eclectic soundtrack. Love and loss become inextricably intertwined, and the resulting achievement led Canada’s 2012 Academy Awards, the Genies, with 13 nominations, more than any other film.
